Creamy soups are my vice and I especially love to indulge in them when I want something comforting. Clam chowder was always one of my favorites growing up, but seeing as it is full of butter, cream, potatoes, and flour, I have missed it terribly over the past few years. If you’re in the same boat, get ready to be reunited with your favorite because this Dairy-Free Clam Chowder recipe will pass for the original.
I created this soup waaaayyy back in 2011 while I was working on recipes for my first book Against all Grain. It has remained a favorite, and I still make it the exact same way even after all these years. In place of the heavy cream, I use cashew cream to thicken this dairy-free clam chowder and give it a creamy taste. I also use celery root (or celeriac) in place of the standard white potatoes to keep this soup SCD and GAPS friendly. Feel free to sub in white potatoes or even white sweet potatoes if you'd like though!

This is very tasty. I used coconut milk instead of cashews and it turned out great. Next time I’ll use more vegetables or less clams.

Where can I find this celery root? Never heard of it. Thank you for this recipe! Its sounds like just the ticket for that craving of creamy but still keep it clean

Does anyone know if this chowder freezes well?

This is the best clam chowder recipe I have ever had!! Clam chowder has always been my favorite soup but being lactose intolerant it normally gives be a terrible stomach ache if I dare to eat it. I have tried coconut cream replacement and it’s just not the same. I guarantee no one would notice that this isn’t traditional clam chowder. My husband couldn’t believe it. He said if he hadn’t actually seen my soaking the cashews he would never know. I blended the hell out of the cashews in a food processor and it was super creamy. I did use regular potato and added a little diced carrot. Thank you so much for the great recipe!

Made this last night. Used potatoes instead of celeriac. Added in a 1/2 cup of white wine. It was amazing. The best clam chowder. Like other reviewers said…there’s no way you’d ever tell this wasn’t loaded with cream or dairy. The consistency was perfect – not too thick and heavy and not too thin. Definitely a keeper.

OK, this is my first recipe reply/review ever – it’s not my thing to leave them. With that said, I felt compelled to, as this was the best clam chowder! To quote one of the earlier posters here, “there’s no way you’d ever tell this wasn’t loaded with cream or dairy. The consistency was perfect – not too thick and heavy and not too thin.” Thank you for sharing this recipe!

You’re so welcome and thank *you* so much for this glowing review!

This is the recipe that made me fall in love with your cookbooks! I only learned that I loved clam chowder when I moved to the Pacific NW (in my 50s) and then I started seeing a naturopath for my ulcerative colitis and was told to go on a strict dairy-free, no potato and no fruit-sugar combination diet. I was crushed until this came along – so many years ago now. And it has been such to joy to watch you and your family blossom and to buy every one of your cookbooks. I wish you continued success in every aspect of your life. A very loyal fan – Liz (now 64 years old!)

Thank you so much for the kind words, Liz!

This takes me back to the years I lived in Monterey, where we’d walk to the wharf for fresh clam chowder in sourdough bowls. This recipe has all the same creaminess & flavors without the dairy that caused me fatigue & heartburn afterwards. Make it today, you will LOVE it!

Have you tried freezing the prepared soup? I would love to know how it holds up to freezing and thawing.
Danielle
Hi Richelle! It freezes and thaws great.
