It was about 4 years ago this Summer that I finally got some answers about dietary changes affecting Ulcerative Colitis. A friend gave me a copy of Breaking the Vicious Cycle, a book written for those with Crohn's, Colitis, Celiac, and Autism and it was like a breath of fresh air compared to what all of the doctors kept telling me. I resisted the massive dietary change initially, but after meeting a few people who had tried the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and had success keeping their symptoms at bay, I decided to take the plunge.
“You are perishable – eat accordingly”
The only problem was that I really loved food and enjoying my meals seemed like it was going to be impossible. So I turned to the internet in search of others eating this way and didn't find much. This was long before Paleo became popular so there was a serious lack of blogs out there catering to grain, refined-sugar, and lactose free recipes. Then I stumbled upon Comfy Belly and Elana's Pantry. Both blogs were beautiful and the food looked like real food! I bookmarked so many of the recipes and then emailed Erica from Comfy Belly for support. Her son suffers from Crohn's and I was so lost at that moment that I was desperate to talk to someone who was an “expert.” She and I exchanged quite a few emails and she made me feel like it was possible to see healing and eat well. It was so reassuring.
Erica emailed me a few weeks ago and asked me to review her newest cookbook, Cooking for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, and I of course said yes. She and Elana both fueled my desire to start and maintain my own blog so I am happy to get to cook from her recipes again! I am a sucker for a good loaf of banana bread so that was the first recipe I tried. It was moist and fluffy and we devoured it! The blueberry coffee cake, sandwich rounds, and chowder all look fabulous as well.
This book is a fantastic resource for those on the SCD. There aren't many comprehensive cookbooks on the market that cater specifically for that diet, so I would suggest it to anyone who follows it. SCD does allow low-lactose cheeses and homemade yogurt, so just beware if you are fully dairy-free. There will still be a ton of recipes for you to use though. Honestly, my only disappointment about the book is that there is not a full-color photo for each recipe because Erica's photography is so lovely! Otherwise, she did a fantastic job creating this book and you can tell she poured her heart into it. After all, moms will do anything to help their children, so this book really shows her dedication to helping her son thrive.
I am giving away 1 copy of the book as well! Just leave a comment below and I'll pick a winner on Monday 4/29 at 6pm PST.
Note: Chocolate Chips are NOT SCD legal, but my body can tolerate the Enjoy Life allergy free kind on occasion after eliminating them for a couple of years.
Stacey
It looks wonderful! It’s always nice to have a cookbook that you know you can pick any recipe from and it will be within your dietary guidelines. I too am a sucker for banana bread. This one looks yummy!

LeAnne Hudson
My husband has just recently discovered that he is diabetic. Sugars, as well as carbs, are killers for him. We are substituting coconut flour and some flax products in a few recipes, but it’s hit and miss on our success rate. Some things are just not edible. However, we have managed to drop his sugar from the 390 range to a consistent 150 w/o insulin. Always looking for recipes that help him eat a “normal” diet. Keep up the good work!!!!!
Thank you,
LeAnne
Chelsea

Hello! This site has been uber helpful in our fight against UC. My husband has been deemed a complicated case. We had put his UC in remission before he had a liver transplant (PSC in case you are familiar), but the surgeries have caused a 4 year off and on flare. It is slowly getting better – SCD for over a year now, but we could use all the recipies we can get.
Thanks so much!
Nikki V

The SCD has changed my life. I struggled for years with digestive problems that made eating unenjoyable and social gathering extremely uncomfortable and I many nights when my entire body would mysteriously swell and I would sit on my floor in pain and just cry. I felt so lost and so embarrassed and alone. I was diagnosed with SIBO, GERD, and PCOS. A friend of mine who has Crohn’s saw that I was on a mission to find out what I was eating that made me feel so terrible, I thought it was gluten for years but that clearly wasn’t enough….so he introduced me to Breaking the Vicious Cycle and SCD. It’s changed me. I’ve even changed my BA from Environmental Studies to Nutrition and Exercise Physiology with a deeper look into drug addictions and food. I’m so thankful for all the resources available now and I hope to be a part of a movement to bring people into The Know about real food health. It all starts with food. And thank you for all you do as well! You are also an inspiration 🙂
Britt
After years of western medecine doctors not knowing what to do with me and my constant GI issues, I saw a naturopath who has changed my life. She put me on the, obscure seeming, SCD diet just over a year and a half ago. At first, I was devastated and felt like I couldn’t eat anything. Thanks to an amazing friend who is both a whiz in the kitchen and an unfailing optimist, I found joy in food despite the restrictions. It took a few months to really do some gut healing, but I’m now so much happy and healthier on my version of SCD (everyone needs modifications to their own needs). I don’t even want those foods that I was sure I couldn’t live without. I’m so happy to see more people becoming aware of this diet as it’s been a life changer/life saver for me! Thanks for your blog and being a part of keeping me healthy and happy!
Tara
I just finished eating an almond flour cinnamon bun muffin from Comfy Belly! I would LOVE to have this book!
Jennifer
Love your recipes and don’t think I could do this without you. I have found avoiding grains helps my symptoms from rheumatoid arthritis and gut inflammation greatly improve. My goal is to stop all the drugs, one left, and manage my symptoms with just diet 🙂
Bridget

Cristie Kalish
I read cookbooks as if they are a best selling novel and would love to add this to my kitchen. I love to cook and grain free is what our family of celiacs does best with and I would love to add this to my mother and mines collection (we share) 🙂
Heather Dominguez
I just recently came across your “Against the Grain” on facebook, through a friend’s post. Jan. 25th my doctor/nutritionist/holistic healer. Took me off Dairy, Gluten and Sugar. I am a southern girl who LOVES food. I grew up eating white bread and butter at just about every meal. Anything and everything tastes great between two slices of bread. I actually had not realized how addicted I was to bread and bread products until I was told to stop eating them. love crackers, toast, pancakes, waffles, muffins. I also LOVE Baking. I love cooking. But I am 42 years old and having to change my entire life. I feel like I am a child learning to cook all over again and I am failing. It is difficult to find recipes I can cook as well as enjoy cooking and eating. I would love to win this cookbook! It seems perfect.
Debra
Would be so excited to win this!
Sara Grambusch

I love this website. I recently started a life change of eating and was reading J.J.Virgins book about eliminating 7hi food intolerant foods for 21 days to see if you have food allergies. I am one of those people who needs someone to tell me what to eat and how often to eat because Im so busy that I just grab at whatever and lately I’ve had more weight gain and sinus and ear issues. I want to take care of my body inside and out. Anyway I love recipes and am always looking for fresh ideas. I have a family so making sure that they are eating healthy diet is important to me. A friend told me about SCD a few months ago. I’ve not had time to fully look into it, but I did cut out just a couple of the things on the “illegal” list. What a difference! I seriously NEED to pursue this, as the years of looking pregnant and feeling crummy have worn me down to just a shadow of my real self. This cookbook would be such a wonderful help to get me on the right track!

I have horrible ulcerative colitis and I’ve been in a flare up for over a year and living scd is the only thing that has been able to help me. I terribly want to have children and I can’t when I’m on the cancer meds that drastically increase the chances of miscarriage and birth deformities. The diet has helped me get off the cancer meds so my husband and I can finally start to talk about having kids. It is so tough for me to find recipes sometimes to make things that aren’t just “meat and veggies” and I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get a copy of the book!!!! Help me!

A couple of years ago I started my new healthy lifestyle by following the SCD diet. Then added back a few things, basically just going gluten free and dairy free. Starting to see some symptoms returning the past couple of months and taking more things away again. The recipes in this book would be helpful for me as I start over again.

I’m so grateful to you and the folks behind the other great grain-free blogs for helping a foodie adjust to the fact that all food does not love me back. I also appreciate that you share your bad days too, because it’s all too easy to feel like a dietary failure every time I bump into something else that doesn’t agree with the “system administrator” as my husband calls it. Thank you for your willingness to share. ^_^

Exciting! My husband suffers from Lyme disease (he’s been ill since we wed 5 years ago) and has been having symptoms that suggest that his antibiotic regimne is resulting in a yeast overgrowth (nasty itchy burning tingling – creepy crawly feelings). He’s been on a yeast free diet for about a year & we would LOVE a new resource to make eating healthy more enjoyable!! GREAT resource!!
Kristen
The book looks beautiful and sounds like a great read! I’d love to win a copy 🙂

I find it interesting how many of the paleo community ended up here because of Crohn’s, UC, or other digestive ills. Nothing like a dysfunctional digestive system to pull people together. 🙂
Amy Ayers

I would love a copy of this cook book! 🙂
I’d really like to share my experience with you!
Several years ago, after wondering why a few sips of beer made me sick, I saw my allergist to have a more thorough allergy test done. I found out I have an intolerance to barley and rye, but not wheat. Since then, I’ve made a concentrated effort to cut both out of my diet. I am very, very conscious of it while at home, but it’s difficult to stick to when dinning out. (Most restaurants in my area aren’t that willing to check their ingredients list.)
I have a 5 month old son. While I was pregnant, I was so afraid he would inherit my horrible allergies and severe asthma, that I pretty much eliminated 95% of my gluten intake. I also made it a point to eat organic whenever possible. The combination of the two has been a complete life changer! I’ve gone from 4+ asthma attacks a week to less than 10 in the past year!
I’m amazed at the results, but I honestly feel like it was 100% luck. I never realized it would change my life so drastically. I still occasionally eat pizza and bread, but want to cut it out completely. Your Facebook posts have really inspired me to keep making changes in my diet!
Sorry this was so long. 🙂
Erin
I have really enjoyed your recipes. They have helped me transition to healthier eating for my body! At first it seemed there was so little I could eat but now I have so many good choices. Thank you!
Betsy
Looks like a great cookbook!

This book is perfect for me!! Just recently learning that Paleo alone is not enough for me. After a recent bout with norovirus, all my sensitivies and problems erupted like a mofo. Atleast it got me to finally see a naturopathic doctor. Together we’re establishing a systematic approach to help me. The SCD lifestyle (and/or GAPS) is how I need to embrace my meal planning. I need all the help I can get. I’m still crying about giving up my beloved sweet potatoes…. but I’m gaining a healthier gut. Hmmm, I’ll take the healthier gut! PICK ME! PICK ME! PICK ME! I LOVE your site Danielle!! AND recipes…that’s just a given. 🙂
Jacquee Wilson
This cook book looks like a wonderful resource that I could use as I continue to learn to cook according to my family’s food ingredient sensitivities.

What a great looking cookbook! I would love to have something like that to turn to when I can’t decide what to cook for dinner that we haven’t had many times over. There really can be variety in specialty health diets.
Christine
Is the SCD where you do not eat polysaccharides like inulin due to digestive disease? If so, I need to learn about it, because I used to take clear fiber (inulin) to help my intestinal disease, but then it caused me so much pain, and I had no idea I was making my symptoms worse! I am so happy I found your website because I need to learn, Thank you!!!
Kate
What a total godsend. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s 9 years ago and have struggled ever since (and for years before, to be honest). I’ve just come out of hospital after a 77 day stay and have found a new doctor who put me on to the SCD. I’m finding it helpful, but restrictive, and I’m not doing as well as I feel I could. This would be a great help.
Claire Peirce
I am wanting to start this way of eating for my whole family and this looks fantastic!
Sandy Klein
I would love a copy of this cookbook. Just starting out and looking for more recipes and information on this way of eating. I’m also obsessed with cookbooks.

These recipes sound fantastic and so does this book. My son was recently diagnosed with Crohns so I am trying to transition into a healthier lifestyle. This book would help greatly with the transition.
Anne R.
I would love a copy of this cookbook. I have made several visits to the ER and Dr only for them to tell me to take this laxative or that fiber supplement. Never has any of them recommended a different diet for a healthier gut. I was turned onto your site by my Mom and have been doing much better since the diet change. However, until just the other day the light bulb in my husband’s head wasn’t turned on so its been difficult to be 100%. Now that he is on board, we are ready for 100% change with no going back. I’m too young to have had the issues I’ve had. I know that if I take care of the problems now then I’ll be not only healthier but happier too.
Jess K
Just getting into this lifestyle and loving it. Love your blog and the many others out there regarding grain-free, SCD, and paleo. This cookbook would be a good start to help me save hours of searching and researching.

Just found your blog!! IT’S GREAT!! Diagnosed with celiac 18yrs ago. Exciting to see healthier cookbooks as there were not any back then!!!
Katie
I would love this cookbook. I have been gluten free on and off for a couple of years now due to an intolerance but lately I have been having more stomach issues and need to be more dedicated to my own health. As a mother of three kids I forget about myself. My oldest daughter was just started on the ketogenic diet and I am busy trying and creating many recipes for her. I think this cook book would inspire me for her as well as help me take care of myself by staying gluten free. Thanks- you have a great blog.
Jennifer
I started SCD on Christmas Day for celiac, and have since brought my allergy ridden constipated kids ages 7 & 10 on board. It is so tough making everything from scratch while keeping the kids interested in this processed crazed world. Here’s hoping that your new cookbook brings some fresh new ideas to mix things up!
Katarina R.
It would be awesome to have a copy of your book! For about two years now I have had very troublesome digestive issues ( i blow up like a balloon all the time) so it would be nice to try a grain and dairy free diet with a whole arsenal of recipes!
Anna
I would love a copy of this book! I have Ulcerative Colitis and in August I decided to try to treat with diet instead of steroids. Your blog was one of the first comforts I found after beginning SCD. Thanks so much for all of your creative recipes and inspiration!!
Cindy Fritts
I would love to have this book! My daughter was diagnosed with Crohns in September and we just started the diet about 1 month ago. Heidi

Halima
Would love to try this cook book.
Michele
I would love to have this cookbook. I started a grain/gluten free diet about 2 months ago because of all the health problems and autoimmune diseases I have. I had no idea grain/gluten was my problem for the past 14 years. None of the doctors could give me answers, so when I came across all the info on what grain/gluten could cause, I immediately cut it from my diet. I am trying to build up a collection of cookbooks that are grain/gluten free, and I would love to have this cookbook.
Danielle
I remember my first week on scd in the intro phase. It was like a miracle, despite my dr.’s extreme counseling that ulcerative colitis was not in any way affected by diet, my quality of life improved drastically, just in that first week. I am so thankful for everyone out there who gave their testimonials- comfy belly included. It was one of my go to websites for a while, especially before the many other more paleo websites appeared.
heather
I started the SCD about 6 months ago to control the symptoms of severe crohns disease. i found paleo on pinteresy, and stumbling upon your blog has seriously been the best thing that has happened to my diet. you make my life so much more enjoyable. i am addicted to good food…sad, yes but true. without your recipes i would just be cheating, and putting myself through lots of pain. I placed my order for your book back in february and can not wait to get that baby in the mail. Id love to add this one to my brand new paleo collection. 😉
Kristen M
I am interested in changing our families diet based on health issues I see in my son. I would enjoy reading through this cookbook.
Mary
This book looks gorgeous! : ) Tasty too.
Angie B
A friend told me about your website a few months ago and I have made countless number of your recipes and am awaiting the arrival of your cookbook. The book above looks like it would be a perfect accompaniment for my cooking.
Michelle
This cookbook looks amazing!
Denise
Wonderful site. I’ll be buying the book anyway so if by chance my comment is drawn just swap it for someone else. I’m collecting paleo / wheat free recipe books – it’s wonderful to be able to access recipes on sites such as yours but I do like to have them in my kitchen as well. You have personally helped me to greatly reduce my arthritis pain and improve mobility with your recipes. It’s not one of the better known pathologies that benefit so effectively but I’d urge any arthritis sufferer to try it. Thanks for sharing so much information.
Sheri
very interested in reading this among a few others I’ve recently been exposed to.
Laurie Bizzell
Count me in! With a son who has major issues with wheat and a diabetic husband, we are always looking for low carb recipes! Yay!
Catherine
I would love to be considered for a free copy of this pretty cookbook. Today I have been SCD for 37 weeks. I am getting ready to celebrate 40 weeks with a little party. I have Ulcerative Colitis and my twin sister has Crohns. We are both enjoying the health benefits of the SCD diet and being a part of such a positive community. Besides Breaking the Vicious Cycle, I do not have any other SCD books (I have pre-ordered yours ;~D) I get my ideas and positive directions from your blog. I love your loaf bread!!!!
Karen
I am just beginning my grain free journey, and feel so lost! I would love to win a copy of this book!

Genevieve Amato
I would love a copy of the book. I frequently visit both her site and your site. They are both wonderful. My son was diagnosed with Crohns last year in January. The day he had his colonoscopy his GI said go by the book. Breaking the vicious cycle. I was so excited that a diet plan could help my son. My husband and I ran to purchase the book. We both were stunned, scared and mad. Mad about the disease and scared that we had to have our 6 year old boy eat this way. It has been the hardest journey. Going to disneyland, legoland, parties at school everyday. I use to love to get party invites now i was cringing and praying he would not get an invite to chuckie cheese, or anywhere else. Well it is a year later he had another colonoscopy last month. His Crohns is under control and his colon is clean. This rollercoaster has been an isane one but i sit here now truely grateful. grateful for these websites/books that provide recipes that make it possible to love to eat and look forward to eating.
