A Space for Baby E

[ssba]

Easton just turned 7 months, and we finally completed his room. As a first time parent with Asher, everything was done weeks before his arrival, and then we barely used it for the first few months as he ended up sleeping in our room. With a busy 5 year old, a business, and a fixer-upper house, and just life, the nursery was far from complete at my due date this time around.

This room would have also been Aila's room, so I had a hard time with the nursery makeover and put it off until long after baby E was born. It was hard to switch all of my visions for the room from girl to boy and imagine it differently. Honestly, I was uninspired and lacking creativity and just wasn't excited about decorating it. I think I was hoping a little nursery fairy would just come and do it all while I was sleeping one night! Boxes and things just kept piling up, and it ended up being more of a storage room than a nursery.

I had an unplanned c-section with E, so once again he ended up sleeping in our room for the first couple of months. Then my fear of something happening to him kept him in there for a couple of extra. I just wanted him near me, all the time. When we finally decided to move him to his room (because mama needed better sleep and E needed better naps!), I realized he really did need a special place of his own and got to work. I had purchased a new rocking chair, rug, and a mirror before he was born, but that was about it. We emotionally purged most of our baby stuff after Aila died, so we were in need of new furniture.

I'm so grateful for Pottery Barn Kids stepping in along side of me and helping to complete his room. It's a strange space, with lots of weird angles and no closet, so I was especially grateful for their free design service that they offer. She came out and mapped out the space based on what we already had, and showed me that it could be made over into a cozy nursery. One of the biggest problems was that there was not a closet in the room, so storing extra diapers, wipes, towels, blankets, etc. was problematic. The media case she suggested has been a lifesaver for me to keep things organized. We also got an extra wide dresser so I could store extra items or clothes in the next size up in the bottom drawers. I chose to keep it fairly neutral, using grey throughout and not doing a big theme, because I learned with Asher that it will all get changed dozens of times over the years as he grows to like different things! Asher's went from airplanes, to trains, to elmo, to Star Wars, to Ninja turtles, and back to Star Wars again! I figure we can build on this for Easton and let him choose his theme as he he gets older.

His room is one of my favorites in the house now. It's quiet, but bright and airy and serene. We spend so much time in there together and I love every second of it. I especially adore the needlepoint yarn animal art. I am the farthest thing from crafty, so no, I did not sit and stitch those. They're from the adorable Emily and Meritt collection for Pottery Barn Kids. I also love all of the little accent items, wire baskets, and frames I found at Target to style the top shelves of the media cabinet until we need them for something else when he's older. I wanted some greenery in his room, but I kill any living plant, so I found these realistic but artificial cute succulent plants instead. He also loves to stare at the driftwood and felt ball mobile I found on Etsy during changing times.

I hope you enjoy a little peek at his space! All of the details are listed at the end of the post.
